Protecting your transfer with a password

Adding a password to your transfer is a simple way to make sure only the right people can access your files.

How to set a password

When creating a transfer, look for the password option before you finalize and share the link. Enter a password of your choice and it will be applied to that transfer.

There are no complexity requirements. A short phrase or random combination of words works well.

What recipients see

When someone opens a password protected link, they see a password entry page before anything else. They type the password and, if it matches, the download page appears as normal with the files listed.

If the password is wrong, they are prompted to try again. The files are never visible until the correct password is entered.

For more on what the download page looks like, see How the download page works.

When to use password protection

Password protection is useful when:

  • You are sharing sensitive documents like contracts or financial files
  • You want to share a link publicly but restrict access to a specific group
  • The link might be forwarded beyond the intended recipient
